Many businesses struggle to choose their first accounting software.
Many businesses struggle to choose replacement accounting software.
The bottom line is, unless you’ve got the time and money to test them all, it can be difficult to find the system that covers all your company’s requirements. So, let’s make it easier; we’ve dealt with a lot of accounting software over the years, and we’re going to narrow all of them down for you to just two options…
Xero and Sage
These are two of the most popular and widely used accounting systems for all types of businesses. And today, we’re going to help you find out which one suits your company the best.
Why believe us?
At Jugo, we’re experts in both Xero and Sage. We’ve been working with both for years, and we can offer expert guidance on the right system for the right company.
Xero and Sage are the two most affordable, user-friendly, feature-rich accounting softwares in the technology world. For small and medium-sized businesses specifically, these are the go-to products.
Sage is the older of the two, having been around for more than 30 years. The UK’s second-largest technology company - with over 6.1 million customers worldwide - it’s safe to say you can trust them with your business’s financials.
Xero, however, is not far behind. Despite it being founded over 20 years after Sage, it is renowned as one of the most popular cloud-based accounting softwares for small and medium-sized businesses, accumulating 1.8 million subscribers in 2019.
Along with the many features both Sage and Xero bring to a company, they are both not only affordable but can actually save you money by completely removing the requirement for a bookkeeping professional. Plus, as they both can run on the cloud, this means you can manage your own accounts at home, on the sofa, or wherever suits you.
The important bit – pricing
Xero accounting software can be purchased on a monthly subscription at three different levels:
Added to the above, Xero allows for an unlimited number of users, automatic and secure backups (managed by Xero), free automatic updates, and the possibility to integrate with over 700 different apps. This subscription is for a single organisation. However, for every new organisation another subscription is required.
Sage 50 pricing
Sage 50 Cloud accounting software has a similar pricing structure and can be purchased on a monthly subscription at three different levels:
All extra prices are also on a per month subscription. So, it’s safe to say that Sage is more expensive on average over the three options. However, with each of their subscriptions, you get access to all the required features within Sage on an unlimited basis. Whereas with Xero’s starter subscription, for example, you are limited to the number of invoices that can be sent out in that month.
While both Xero and Sage benefit accountants and customers in different ways, Xero outshines Sage in the sense that it allows for an unlimited number of users at no extra cost. Sage comes with much higher costs, especially if you are looking for more than two users. Xero also has in-built payroll capabilities; it’s one of the few accounting softwares that offers this option.
Sage on the other hand surpasses Xero in that its entry level plan offers better value; largely due to its no limit on accounting activity, and 24/7 support.
Xero and Sage can both manage inventory, albeit Xero’s inventory system is much more basic. And if you are considering moving from Sage to Xero, a useful third party tool is available to aid with the migration.
Overall, we believe that, for start-ups and those with limited knowledge, Xero is better than Sage. It’s easier to use, more easily accessible online, and – depending on your requirements – it is marginally cheaper. Sage is generally a more complex system and is better suited to those with accounting experience. However, it can also provide more ‘bang for your buck’ depending on the subscription you choose.
